Lilly Pad Hopping!
Today we got to take our shoes off and gave some fun! We hopped from lilly pad to lilly pad using the letters on them to make words! Kids that were waiting to hop were writing to words to prepare for this week's spelling test. We had a blast making blend words!
Map Reading
We got some great practice reading maps and using cardinal directions to read maps with Flat Stanley in the hallway last week! Stanley moved all around the US and we had to describe his location using North, South, East and West. So today we put our practice to the test! Using the maps of our rooms that we completed for homework, we described different objects in each other's rooms using the cardinal directions. For example Anastasia's bed was north of her lamp. It was fun moving around the room and looking at everyone's maps!
Partner Reading
We learned how to read with partners! I know it may sound simple, but reading with a partner has many advantages and requirements. A partner can help you think about your book in ways you never did alone. They can also help you word solve and it's just plain fun! We learned proper techniques for each partner to be successful. We have to sit EEKK (elbow to elbow, knee to knee) and hold the book in the middle. We also practice "You read, I read" so that everyone gets a turn. We love partner reading!

Neat Stuff for the Weekend
This is too cute/gross, but any kid will love it! In the Halloween spirit, you might try this trail mix treat with your kiddos. Now, it might be hard to eat a few of these things, but you have to just keep telling yourself that it's ok because it is real food! Check out the Sandy Toes and Popsicles Blog for this twist on spooky things! There is even a free printable if you want to share it with others! Happy eating!!

Neat Stuff for the Weekend
With Halloween coming up, I thought this cooking activity would be perfect! This one is from the Disney Family website... EDIBLE EYE BALLS!! Looks like you're gonna need melted white chocolate, sandwich cookies (maybe oreos?), gummie life savers and chocolate chips. It looks easy enough for your child to take charge-have them write the grocery list, read the directions, and do some of the tasks. Of course, don't leave them alone in the kitchen, but you get the idea!
Don't forget to share one with your favorite first grade teacher on Monday! ;)

Neat Stuff for the Weekend
This is too cool to be true! I hope it really works... On this site, you send in your child's drawing, they design it into a real life stuffed animal, and send it to you! Check out Child's Own Studio. There are some neat pictures of the transformations they have made! They don't seem to be too expensive, but it does mention something about a waiting list. You may have to do some more exploring and questioning before you make your purchase, but I just wanted to offer you the idea!

An "apple day" keeps the fun all day!
Apple Day was a blast! We made applesauce and wrote the recipe and we taste tested all the different colors so we could make graphs! We also practiced ABC order, learned about apple trees and how they change throughout the seasons and found a mystery picture on a 100s chart-an apple tree!
The Wedding of the Year!
Well, I don't know if you heard, but we went to a wedding last Thursday... Mr. Q and Miss U got married! The honorable Mrs. Wood officiated the ceremony and we even made a gift for the lovely couple-a quilt! And our very own James got to be Mr. Q!
The Great Graphing Project!
To assess graphing, we completed a really fun project. The kids got to survey each other with different questions (no 2 students had the same question). Then they used their data to make a picture graph and a bar graph. They also had to explain why they could not make a real object graph and draw conclusions with their data. Look for these posted in the hallway! They did so great!

Neat Stuff for the Weekend
Having a sleepover this weekend or sometime soon? Here's something fun I know the kids would love! This one comes from Real Dana... I had a hard time actually finding the post on her site, but the Pinterest link linked up to her site, so I'm pretty sure that's where this idea comes from (fingers crossed)!
Dana got some balloons, and put a time on each one. Inside each balloon is a message of some type of game, snack, activity, movie, or fun thing to do at that time. Pop the balloon at the correct time and find out what's coming next! The mystery of what's in the balloon would make the night even more fun than just a regular sleepover! Enjoy!
