Reading Celebration

We have learned all of our reading strategies! We have worked so hard and become great readers. We celebrated how far we have come last week with the kindergarteners. We read our just right books to them to show how hard we've worked and how far we've come! Thanks to Ms. Gabos's class for coming down!

Fall Party

If you weren't there, check out all the great things we did!

We are Bucket Fillers!!

Mrs. Reed (our counselor) came in a did a lesson that really stuck. We learned how everyone has a "bucket" that needs to be filled each day. We can fill others' buckets by being kind, polite and friendly. When we do that, it fill our own bucket too! If we are negative, we dip into other buckets. When we do that we dip into our own buckets, and everyone is down.

This class really loved the lesson! We commited to be BUCKET FILLERS!

Activity of the Week-Blend Lilypads

We had so much fun hopping around in our socks! We used lilypads to make words that begin with blends. The kids had to jump from lilypad to lilypad, saying each sound and spell a word at the end. It was fun to cheer on our friends!

Our Applesauce!

The last week in September was all about APPLES! We sorted apples, we graphed apples, we sang about apples, we read poems about apples, we measured apples, we floated apples, we drew apples and, of course,
WE ATE APPLES!

We recorded our applesauce recipe for our September memory book page. We will make a page each month and get it at the end of the year to remember all the fun things in first grade.

Meet the newest edition to the classroom!

I am so happy we now have our JUST RIGHT BOOK LIBRARY in full stock and ready to go. This special library is designed for students to have access to books on their reading level. Each basket is designated with a shape, and each students is assigned a shape. That basket holds books that are perfect for them-not too hard or too easy-JUST RIGHT!

Students have had the opportunity to choose their own books from this library for Read to Self time every day. We have been building our reading STAMINA by reading every day, and adding one more minute to our reading time each day. We have finally made it to 8 minutes (halfway to our goal of 15 minutes). We celebrated by getting our very own book boxes (pictured above the library baskets). The students got to fill them with 3 books from the JUST RIGHT library and 3 free choice books (they can be too easy or too hard). Now students have their own collection of books that they chose on their own. I hope you are seeing that you child is able to read for a longer period of time at home. This is so easy to practice, just set a timer and go!

Also, check out this website: http://bookwizard.scholastic.com/ to see what reading level your books at home are. Select the reading system "Guided Reading" for the letter level to be shown when you type in a title or series name in the "Quick Search" section. Now you know how to find just right books!
